What it is?
A Raman spectroscopic device is a hardware that is able to detect the presence and concentration of molecules.
How do you detect it?
A hand held device is used to generate a spectrum of the inspected product.
How does it work?
It sends a laser beam to the product and performs a spectroscopic analysis of the scattered light to determine which molecules are present.
What do we think about this technology?
This technology is popular in the field of pharmaceutical products. Indeed, this is one of the rare approaches which enables validation of the chemical composition of a drug without any manufacturing modification. It is however quite expensive, needs some specific training, and is not exceptionally reliable. The drawbacks of Raman detection can be avoided by performing authentication of the primary or secondary packaging. For the specific case of pharmaceutical tablets (for which Raman is the most used approach ), the primary packaging is typically a blister pack or a plastic bottle with a label.
Cryptoglyph® can efficiently secure both packaging methods. AlpVision Fingerprint® can even be used to authenticate the plastic bottle itself.
