AlpVision Fingerprint technology authenticates molded or stamped parts by automatically recognizing naturally occurring microscopic features found in a mold. Interesting and convenient, this solution allows brand owners and experts in the field to identify genuine from counterfeit products using an iPhone at any given time, without modifying anything in the production process. To proceed with the authentication, the item requires a matte finish, typically obtained by EDM or sandblasting. The AlpVision team was recently able to characterize this finish and show that a range of 21 to 48 on the Charmilles scale of roughness is appropriate for Fingerprint (or an Ra of 1.1 to 18.0 um).
