What is it?
RFIDs are electronic devices that respond with an electromagnetic wave when stimulated with the same.
How do you detect it?
RFID detection is performed using a specific reading device, which includes certain smartphones.
How does it work?
Radio frequency identification is done by using tiny chips which emit electromagnetic fields to automatically identify and track tags attached to objects. An RFID tag is basically a tiny radio transponder, a radio receiver and transmitter.
What do we think about this technology?
From a security perspective, RFID implementing a challenge-response approach can be extremely effective. Moreover, it is invisible and allows authentication using an NFC-enabled smartphone through packaging. Its main drawbacks are the unit cost of the RFID and the integration cost, which make it unrealistic for most large deployments. If brand protection is the primary objective, then it is much more pragmatic to simply secure the packaging using Cryptoglyph® or AlpVision Fingerprint® than to use an overengineered solution like RFID.
